The requested Master bedroom addition could have been located on a new second floor, but making room for new stairs and adding to the bulk of what was a typical but cozy post-war suburban house was ruled out in favor of placing it in the rear yard as a sleeping pavilion.  The presence of an existing mature sycamore tree suggested wrapping the new addition around it, thus creating a nicely scaled courtyard between it and the existing house. Everything would stay on one level.
